How would i change the ESN of a Motorola Droid 2 Global?

Ok so my brother bought a Motorala Verizon Droid 2 Global off of Craig's List, only to find that the phone had been reported as lost when he tried to activate it. So I found that Verizon keeps track of their phones using something called an ESN, which I believe stands for Electronic Serial Number. So what I'm asking is there a way that we could somehow change that ESN so that he could actually activate and use the phone, rather than having wasted $200. And Also if changing the ESN is possible how would I go about doing it? I do have a chord to connect it to the computer.
